How to Use Our Christmas Math Worksheets
Making it from December 1st through the start of winter break is no easy task for classroom teachers and homeschool parents alike. Effective teachers know how to channel their students’ enthusiasm for the holidays into engaging and meaningful learning opportunities, and our free Christmas math worksheets are a great resource for boosting your upcoming lessons to make them more festive and enjoyable.
With so many distractions going on for teachers and students this time of year, using Christmas themed worksheets (including puzzles, multiplication activities, riddles and brain teasers, word problems, and/or coordinate art activities) can help keep your students on track and learning every day this month.
If you need a few suggestions for effective ways that you can use our Christmas math worksheets with your students this holiday season, here are a few great ideas:
Emphasize Real-World Math Applications: The holiday shopping season, although hectic, provides tons of opportunities to show how many math concepts apply to real life. Many of the scenarios on the worksheets in the word problems section focus on Christmas-related scenarios such as shopping and budgeting, feeding reindeer, and using math to bake Christmas cookies. Whenever you can show your students how what they are learning in math class applies to the real world, the more they will learn to see math as an important and meaningful subject.
Gamify the Holiday Season: Another way to use our Christmas math worksheets to make your upcoming lessons more fun and engaging is to use them for games or even as rewards. For example, you can reserve the last 10-15 minutes of class to have students compete by working on any of the Christmas order of operations puzzles in the libraries above. The student (or team of students) that wins can receive a prize of your choosing.
Post Christmas-Themed Problems in Your Classroom: Looking to decorate your math classroom for the holidays? Printing and posting Christmas-themed math problems and coordinate art is a great way to combine Christmas and math when it comes to decorating your classroom. You can post blank problems for your students to try and solve, or you can post completed student work.
Have Students Create Their Own Problems: Once your students have had some experience with working on and solving a variety of problems from our Christmas math worksheets, you can give them the opportunity to create their own holiday-themed math problems. For example, students can use common Christmas symbols to create their own order of operations puzzles, create holiday-themed word problems, or even create their own holiday-themed coordinate art.
Instead of working against your students’ excitement for upcoming holidays, use it to your advantage by channeling their enthusiasm into meaningful math learning experiences. By sharing our free Christmas math worksheets in your upcoming lessons this December, you are allowing your students to keep the focus on math, while in a fun and holiday-themed way!
